Thanks for the suggestion - that's a pretty cool feature. Although
base64 encoding would make images a tad bigger in size, that might be

though, it doesn't seem to be supported by IE versions 7 and lower.
Does the website team have a list of targeted browsers (the main
question: do we need to support IE6)? If the data: URI doesn't work in
IE7 then that is (unfortunately) a considerable drawback :(

I can't make a promise about real IE7, but at least IE8 in IE7 mode supports data: URL's. IE6 obviously doesn't.

I guess someone should just run a quick test to see whether or not it works in IE7 well.

By the way, lack of support from old versions of IE is why I suggested to use this feature only for images that are purely eye candy (and small enough, of course).
