Actually, it was Italo, not me being in the US, but I don't recall the 
exact conference he attended. IMHO it was Flourish, but I am not 100% 
sure about it.

My knowledge of the American market tends to zero, but would it make 
sense to host a separate US confcall, to bring all the American folks 
together? I am happy to join and learn a bit, and give advice where 
possible.

The US market has ever since been a problem, I recall that also from my 
OOo times. Large country, not so many active people (or rather, in case 
of OOo, probably a lack of coordination). So connecting people in a call 
and doing some plans might help?

I agree. The community has grown rapidly, but from my gut feeling, I'd 
say people are sometimes not too lazy, but rather too shy, to work on 
some tasks. :) I guess that sharing knowledge and actively encouraging 
people, and supporting in coordination, could help. This phenomenon is 
not exclusively to marketing, but I think to the overall project (and 
it's not only LibreOffice suffering from that, also other free software 
projects).

I will see what I can do. The problem is that the WYSIWYG editor we used 
up to now does not work with newer wiki versions.

Sure, if we find some volunteer developers, we can work on that, but I 
have no one at hand right now how volunteered. :)
