Hi Christoph,

during the OOo times it was quite common for me to "throw in ideas":-)
Today, I'd like to do this by addressing a topic related to handling of
mail attachments on our mailing lists. Personally, I think this could be
beneficial for almost everyone getting in touch with our project.

thanks for the proposal, and sorry for me being the bad guy here, but: I would not do this out of several reasons.

First, it requires backup space. We just had to invest in larger hard disks for our regular backups, and offering users to upload files will require more space, thus costs more money.

Second, it brings liability risks. What if someone uploads illegal stuff? What if it's copyrighted material? What if we lose the files and someone thinks we can be held liable? (I agree this problem exists with the wiki is well, but I do not want to open a second construction site for it.)

Third, we already have existing tools, like Nabble or the wiki. In addition, there are a few other services providing that for free. It may sound arrogant, but I don't know if I want people who do not know how to use these services tp upload stuff at our site. I receive dozens of mails of people who 1. are to dull to use e-mail 2. can not read 3. do not listen. (Yep, that sounds harsh, I know. But if people insult you personally simply because they can not use their mail client, you tend to get a bit "harder" on this.) Can you imagine what happens if someone now sends attachments and in the end finds them on the net? Lots of more manual work for us with explaining, deleting and the like. Don't even think about explaining it to them. Once again: Many people DO NOT READ. :/

So, as nice as the idea is, I think it would bring more issues than it helps..

Florian
