After hitting CTRL+F to open the Find textbox
and typing the data to search for, the user must still reach for the mouse
and click to put the focus back on the document for F3 to work.

You can simply press Esc to close that dialog.
This also no problem if you are using Find and Replace (Ctrl+H by default)
dialog box - although it will search previous string until you press Enter at
least once (and then it is easier to press Enter again that reach for F3).

By the way, I also find myself pressing F3 to repeat search in LibreOffice ;) .
This is default keystroke in my web browser (Opera) and desktop environment
(KDE SC) of choice.
