I was under the impression that the red trefoil on white was an Adobe

The Adobe icon has the red trefoil with Adobe or Acrobat (older
versions) on it, while the format icon has the red trefoil with PDF on
it. Of course, the two icons were studied in a subtle way, in order to
have the format icon different enough (full square instead of sheet of
paper with folded angle, different text) but also similar enough (red
trefoil and red colour) to associate them visually.

I thought that other products used a stylized version of the same icon
for recognition purposes, but I didn't know that it was standardized
in 1993 (presumably around the time that Adobe Acrobat 1.0 came out?)

If I remember well, the pre-announcement happened at CeBIT 1992, and
immediately after worldwide (Acrobat 1.0, still proprietary). One year
later, during spring 1993, Adobe announced Acrobat 2.0 with a free PDF
Reader and a proposal for an open format which could be implemented by
third parties for free, provided they were using the format icon.

The implementation goals of the campaign do seem a bit fuzzy; in
particular, I'm not exactly sure what they wanted us to do with the
icons. I thought that the smaller icons were just to demarcate
individual PDF files, but reading their graphics page more closely, it
looks like they intended them to be used to link back to PDF Readers
as well.

Unfortunately, there is a huge confusion between the Adobe software and
the PDF format, as both use the same name (although one is proprietary
software and the other a free open standard).

A different discussion, yes, but a related one (and I figured I'd
mention the idea before I forgot about it... :-)

Right, I suppose that we can start discussing it now on the marketing
mailing list - and find partners - to launch it at the conference in
Milan (if possible).
