Look up "DACM" as user name on the OpenOffice.org Base forum. He has
longstanding experience with using Base/HSQLDB in split mode. There is
even a link to a downloadble file that helps you set this up, i.e.
provides what OOo and LO fail to actually do at the moment. Looks
promising, am going to play around with it soon.

What I learned last night is that HSQLDB is available as a binary on Linux repositories. It appears to be one of the installed packages in Ubuntu 12.04 (libhsqldb-java).
