Hi :)
That sounds like an excellent strategy.

It's likely to help boost LibreOffice's presence at conferences and
raise 'our' profile with whoever else goes along to such conferences
for other projects. Also people who go mainly for LibreOffice also
get to see other projects. There are some quite nice t-shirts and
things that could be worn at such events to make LibreOffice more
visible but i think it's important to also have a suit&tie contingent
(i think there is a tie-pin or tie-design somewhere in marketing).
Regards from
Tom :)

        Andrew, well said.

Um honestly I don't have the time. Sorry but first line made me realize
how far off point this is getting.

All in all, this is about the project and whatever it takes to build the
project in North America. If you or anyone else wants to try to have a
conference/meet and greet somewhere feel free to lead the charge.

All the best,
Joel

One of my strategies has been to take note of specific computer conferences
that are hosted in the area, for example, Linux Fest. I have managed to
assemble some people at previous Linux Fest gatherings in Columbus Ohio (but
I could not attend the conference in 2013, first one I missed). I have met
some interesting people.

It does not pull people in from far away that would not be in the area
already, but, some of the people are willing to travel for the conference a
bit and then meet. I will see if I can make that happen in 2014 again.

Will see how many of those close to Ohio are willing to meet-up for that :-)
