Could this be related to this discussion: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg36731.html and bug 60415: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60415 ?If so, a workaround may be to use Paste Special and select Bitmap format. This would break the link to the original URL, and embed a copy of the image in the document. Whether or not that's acceptable to you obviously depends on what you're aiming to do.
Doesn't seem to affect all images, but the exact set of conditions for an image to cause a problem isn't clear...
