If Win7 has a similar option then it does allow some fairly fine grain options.  Changing the dpi 
setting is the fastest route but as you point out it will change a lot more.

No i hadn't coincided changing the OS options, thinking about it I'd rather
not as the only thing i really struggle with is seeing formulas in either a
cell or the formula bar. Not by any means unusual to paste a formula into
notepad just to check the detail :(
I was thinking that being able to tweak the interface was a long-shot but -
if you don't ask 
Might try the OS option though
