Hi :)
I like my answer in conjunction with Jay's but i have a feeling that Cor's
Extension (as given by Tinkerer in another thread and quoted&copied below)
is better.

Tom,

If a1 has '10/30 entered the work around is to use value(a1) in any 
formula that requires a1 to be a number.

Paste, then click on the icon in the toolbar and it is done.
Wherever there is a number prefixed by ' the ' will be removed.
Nothing else will be changed and your sheet looks exactly the same.
