A suggestion about graphics

In several user guides, we advise users to give their graphics useful names rather than sticking with the default Graphic1, etc. Yet we don't follow this advice ourselves!

If graphics were given easily recognisable names (for example numbered graphics being called Fig1, Fig2, etc., and inline graphics things like FooIcon), then it would be much easier to handle the "disappearing graphics" problem. The initial .odt file could be copied and unzipped, and if any graphics were not shown in Writer, they could be retrieved from the graphics subdirectory and displayed alongside with a simple display program like xv, feh or eog. This would make editing/proofing much easier.

Even if the file was actually stripped of graphics on saving (as shown by a drastic reduction in its size), the graphics themselves would be safe and could be zipped and uploaded along with the text file.

A very good suggestion. I would suggest more descriptive names than
Fig1, Fig2, etc. because the sequence of topics in a chapter often
changes.

One obvious problem with naming graphics Figx is that an addition or deletion or rearrangement of them will alter the numbering somewhat.

Hi
Yes, i think Fig1 etc is not much more descriptive.  I'm guessing that Hazel really meant something more along the lines of "SaveAs-dialogue" or "ChartCreate1" or whatever

The method I employ for labeling screen captures is typically including a descriptive term used in the dialog-box title, submenu command, or whatever.

Gary

And a tiered labeling method using a separator, such as a hyphen, could be employed.

One example might be dialog-box title-subitem1-subitem2--for one employing three tiers. Another might be: File-command-subcommand-subsubcommand, etc.

Hi,
I gave this a go when I worked on chapter 11 of the Writer guide. I renamed all the graphics as Ch11Figx. Those graphics not in a figure I called Ch11pagex-1,-2 and so on.
Re-reading the work I decided to add another two figures at position Fig 14. All the graphics following that insertion point, except the last two in the document, renamed themselves as graphicsx. Strangely non of the in-line graphics past the insertion point, Ch11pagex, changed name. I backed off at this point and left it as it was, thinking that I was creating too much work for the rewards.

Hello

I have learnt from experience when naming graphic files used in documents -
never use figure numbers as part of the filename. I have found it best to
use descriptive filenames, for example, TextToolbar.png, FontPage.png.

Please note that I have capitalised the beginning of each word and have not
used any spaces or other characters to separate the words.

In my opinion, it is best to only use alpha characters as these characters
have the same ASCII codes no matter what system or language is being used.

Peter
