[... Template Team Idea Discussion ...]

If somebody could start to investigate available, create missing, rate
existing ... templates - that would be a real huge improvement. The good
thing is, that we can even ask our users who are already there to test
them until they are that perfect to e.g. ship it with LibO.

Making the them available, via the the Template Website, is one thing
and the way to go. "Shipping with" when the program is already bloated
is not. Lets keep things simple, please.

I propose to look forward and assume that we have some good templates.

Today, we communicate that LibO/OOo are a "productivity tools" and
people download and install it. But then they are confronted to
(literally) empty pages - that is the reason why the people doing the
user support frequently get questions how to start. Consequently, the
German community started to create a "Box" that contains many additional
artwork and templates. And, the templates issues has also been mentioned
many times in the OOo user surveys ...

So why do we ship a feature rich office suite you can build databases
with. You can do complex analysis of numerical data, but people are
unable to type a simple (formal) letter. To me, "bloated" starts if
people don't see much benefit right from the start :-)

However, the templates idea is great ... in any case!

Such a question can be (partiall) answered :-) Within the Renaissance
team, there has been some very basic analysis on the templates usage.
Please have a look at:
http://uxopenofficeorg.blogspot.com/2009/02/what-document-templates-do-our-users.html

And also the "most popular" rating here (example: English):
http://templates.services.openoffice.org/en/mostpopular

I will have to look more at the Renaissance site, as that maybe useful.
As for the "Most popular", that seems to me to be misleading. How
many of those downloads are being installed? How many are being used a
week after install? How many are being used a month after install?

Some of the data isn't fully suitable for this task, of course. But this
is the data which is currently available - and it already tells us
something. Even IBM - doing some research on document content - didn't
have access to templates, so they used what is available in the web. So,
maybe there is a need to collect the tiny bits and pieces of information
to get a more complete picture.

All other usage tracking - e.g. within the OpenOffice.org Improvement
Program - doesn't consider such information, because it starts to be
"personal related information". If somebody uses "applications" quite
frequently, does it mean that this user unemployed? Who really wants to
share that information

[...]

Cheers,
Christoph
