Forums are interesting, because they simplify the organization and the
display of messages in such a way that's it easy and user-intuitive to see
the relation between every messages part of a discussion.

I know a lot of people use mailing list in the open source community.
Personally, my vision is probably similar to the one of Narayan. If you want
to see a complete discussion and you are not archiving the messages since
forever, you need to rely on the mailing list archives.

An interesting way to improve the system would be to let people subscribe to
the mailing list to receive the messages in their inbox, but implement a way
to reply to any message from the archives (just like a normal forum) and
support threaded views.
