Quite.  

For most people the answer is to shrug and pay the money because they are unaware of any other 
option and wherever they bought the machine from is unlikely to know either (or at least not admit 
to knowing).  



I just did a quick search for "computers" on Amazon (since it happened to be open due to someone 
else's post) and found about 3 out of the first 5 machines it listed claimed to have OpenOffice 
pre-installed, one of the machines was a chrome-book and the other just didn't seem to mention any 
programs bundled with the computer.  


So, things do seem to be improving a bit but i imagine MS will fight against that.

A friend of mine got caught in that trap when she bought a new computer
a couple of years ago.  She called me up and asked how she could get
access to her documents.  OpenOffice to the rescue.
