multilingual TDF planet feeds

Dear all,

Some time ago (a long time ago) the decision was made to only have the
planet as an English only feed. Meaning, the TDF planet is only in
English.

In the upcoming website, on its front page (see the specs), we will
have a feed for the TDF planet being displayed aside the official blog
feed.

I would like to seize this opportunity to ask an important
task: recreate a full, multilingual TDF planet . I am happy to help
select the blogs, but I need your input, you, the native-lang
community, in sending or publishing the RSS feeds you'd like to see
aggregated.

Side question: who runs the existing planet?

Thank you,

Thanks for reviving this  I would like to have a planet like this one:
http://planet.opensuse.org/global/
You can filter it by language (what I don't like are the flags, you know
why :), but also you are able to display all languages. Even if you
can't read all, I think it has the very positive effect to show the
activities and enthusiasm.

Side question: who runs the existing planet?

I think it's TDF
Cheers
Sophie

yes indeed. I went to visit the planet -planet software feed aggregator
(http://www.planetplanet.org/) that we currently use and I don't see
anything that would block us from enriching our own platform, so let's
go with it and add more feeds?

Best,

Charles.

the discussion we had in the past was whether to have multiple language at one planet, or one planet per language.

My personal take is to not mix up languages, but rather set up one Planet per language. This requires having one maintainer per Planet to maintain the feeds.

Setting it up is a rather easy thing.

Okay. Well, I'd like to experiment with the first option: multiple
languages on one planet. There are indications that the path we chose
first may have been demotivating for some non-English blogging
authors

Of course, I assume that we would still need one maintainer per
language?

best,

Charles.

You need to consider that not all bloggers write about LibreOffice all the
time, IMHO it's convenient to have the requirements page where al authors
could see the characteristics that a feed must have to be included on the
planet and open a call for nominations.

True. One established practice is to have the bloggers create a
LibreOffice category or tag that specifically identifies their post. At
least that's something we do with the Planet today.

Best,

I personally feel strongly _against_ such a solution, as having a zillion of languages mixed in the current planet setup will cause nothing but confusion. However, this is just my personal take on that, so - if there are no objections from the community, I won't vetoe.

Of course, I assume that we would still need one maintainer per
language?

Yes, that would help to judge the blog's content, indeed.

Guess why whe don't advertise TDF planet among Brazilians and why there
are no entries from Brazilians in TDF planet?

Pushing further, from the TDF planet POV, Brazil does not exist. We are
in the limbo, just as Turks, Slovenians, Argentinians, French, ...

Enough said, I guess.

If you can filter the language you want to read and keep that filter
set, I don't see what is disturbing here. You'll see only German, or
only Spanish if you want. For me I prefer to see German and Spanish, so
we will be both happy

So wouldn't that be supportive for the idea to try a mixed planet ?
Well, if it is not published at all on the Brazilian site, that would
not change anything of course.

OTOH, it might also be an advantage when people see the international
nature of our community. Of course (I may have missed details) short
snippets to show more and the tags to pick out the LibreOffice related
ones are useful.
And when after some time we learn that it doesn't work like this...
changing is not a big deal, I guess?

no. The current Planet does not support filtering at all. It would be one large stream, with all languages combined, just as if I wrote my mail one sentence in German, one in French, one in English. Again, filtering is _not_ available in the current Planet setup.

That's why I am so hesitant...

I was not able to determine what tool OpenSuse is using actually....

Best,

I'll ask Cedric on irc tomorrow

In fact, if you read the "Readme" on that page, it is based on the KDE Planet code. Anyway, the code is there for us to use.

I have read all of the posts on this thread, and, I support Sophie's suggestion of using the OpenSuse Planet code. This option allows users to filter the nl blogs they are interested in and does not have EN blog dominate as the primary blog, although, we could make the default initial blog filter the Official LibreOffice EN blog. Regardless, the OpenSuse planet code would allow the choosing of the nl blogs at the discretion of the blog users.

We had discussed this topic at length and I seem to remember that the final consensus was to have different/individual nl blogs which would work well the OpenSuse code. I would prefer not to have one big blog mix-up which IMO would discourage readers. If I decide to read the EN blog, then I would expect to just read EN language posts and not have to wade through other nl posts. With the OpenSuse code, I would get to personalize my own mix-up of nl blogs, which would be great!

The OpenSuse Planet model seems to address all of our needs.

Cheers,

Marc
