[steering-discuss] relocating mailing lists at libreoffice.org?

Hello,

on the steering-discuss list, we currently discuss about @libreoffice.org e-mail addresses for community members. Just focusing on the technical issues for this mail:

I would like to have those e-mail forwarders handled by a separate mail server, independent from the mailing list server. However, we have a few listes directly @libreoffice.org, which makes things complicated.

There are two options for this issue:

a.) We could use @libreoffice.net or some other domain ending (TLD) for those e-mail addresses

b.) We move the mailing lists @libreoffice.org to some subdomain (like l10n@libreoffice.org => l10n@global.libreoffice.org)

Thoughts on that?

Hi

I think my preference would be for the mailing lists to have
@global.libreoffice.org addresses but that is assuming it is fairly easy to move
the list of subscribers.

The .org is best looking ending. People still seem most familiar with .com but
.org is highly prized and well regarded.

If you want to have a separate email server the forwarders it might be easy to just setup a virtualized install of a Linux distro and go from there.

I also think that using the sub-domains as you mentioned below is a good idea as it makes it easier for users to remember the address.

Hi Jonathan,

we even have "real" hardware I could use. The only issue, technically spoken, is that I can enter only one or a set of MX in the DNS for the libreoffice.org zone. I would like to have a separate MX for @libreoffice.org, and a separate for all mailing lists. Therefore, I have to relocate the global mailing lists. It's no problem to take the subscriber lists to the new lists, it's just a question of which subdomain fits for the relocated lists.

Freedesktop uses lists.freedesktop.org  ergo:
libreoffice@lists.freedesktop.org

Gnome uses a -list suffix for lists: gnome-shell-list@gnome.org next to
michael@gnome.org.

KDE uses no suffix and ( I guess munges) them together: eg.
amarok@kde.org.

It seems you'd prefer to use the freedesktop approach right ?

  HTH,

    Michael.

technically not possible. We use Mailman at lists.tdf/libo for internal lists, and mlmmj for external lists. So the lists subdomain is already taken.

What about b.) with
1) @project.libreoffice.org - for all nonpersonal mail addresses i.e.
        Mailinglists, multirecipients, ..

2) @libreoffice.org - for officers and highload merits

and maybe

3) @community.libreoffice.org - for the adicts (generous availability)

so the "3)" ones give some "aahhh"s and "ooohh"s noticing a "2)" one..
similar *but not equal* to the <2char>@openoffice.org adresses. ;o))

What I like on Ubuntu is that signing the Code of conduct.
You have to sign the document with your gpg key. This way some going
through baptism of fire would be the price for the mail address.

You asked for it ;o))

Hi,

I just posted my thoughts at http://go.mail-archive.com/gnnXjZOwcohQMIixGkSkyW4U4GQ= -- best is to follow-up there.

Hm, seems the search doesn't work. It's here: http://www.mail-archive.com/website@libreoffice.org/msg02999.html

Hi

Can we shorten the subject lines a bit? All i see is
"Re: [steering-discuss] ..."
a 2 letter abbreviation or something like
"Re: [SC]"
"Re: [Users]"
"Re: [Web]"
would let me see the first word at least.

people demanded these long prefixes to the lists, so I set them.

May i suggest for the developers mailing list instead of just [libreoffice] would it be an issue to change it to [developers-LO] or something of that nature? Libreoffice only is a bit ambiguous IMHO.

Hi

It was a good idea to try it and was useful at first but your community has
vastly increased and a lot has changed. We don't need "LO" or "libreoffice" in
the subject-line because that is already clear from the "sender" field.

Tom,

This is the steering discuss list. You may find it too long to read,
but perhaps it would be wise to point out that this is the Steering
Committee list, not a conversational mailing list (use discuss@ for
instance).

Thanks,

Charles.

following discussions from people who are having problems with the lists already in their existing form, I would be careful to change the prefix. Lots of people will complain then as their filters don't work anymore. When I see lots of request, we can do so, but in fact, you're the first who asked.

For the rest, Charles is right, let's use the website@ mailing list.

well, it does work - you just need to give it a chance to receive and
index it
there was a increase in processing time/latency, so it switched to
"batch-processing mode".
