Hi Nick,

I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.8. I am trying to start a new database and
trying to click on use Wizard to create table. It doesn't click properly
and the suggestion of creating a table using the Wizard vanishes. I have
to confess I haven't used Libreoffice before, but my Boss suggested it
for a database and showed me how to start off. I have used a database
before but I really can't get on with this at the moment. I'm in a big
sulk at the moment and have uninstalled Libreoffice, working all weekend
so I'll have another go next week. If you can think of anything that
might get me going, I would be really grateful.

How to create a simple, editable address list without wizard nor Java components:

File>New>Spreadsheet.
Put the field names in row #1 (Name, Surname, ZIP, City etc.)
Fill out the table below the header row with your actual data.

File>Save As...
Create a new directory for the file you are going to save and go to that directory.
Enter some file name
File Type: dBase (*.dbf)

Close the spreadsheet.
File>New>Database
[X] Connect to an existing database
Type: dBase
Specify the _directory_ where you dropped your dBase file.
[X] Register the database (for later use in serial letters)
Save the database (*.odb file) somewhere.
The database (*.odb) has nothing more than one table so far. Open the table and check if your data are alright. The database table reflects the contents of your *.dbf file in its dedicated directory. More *.dbf files in the same directory would add more tables to the database.
Close the table and its database.
######### end of set up ########

Start a new letter in Writer, hit F4 for the data source window, in the left pane of the data source window, browse your database --> Tables --> your table Drag the grey column headers into your letter. This will add place holders for the name and address fields. Notice that you can edit the data in the data source window (F4) without opening the database. When you are going to print your letter you will be prompted to print a serial letter. The printing dialog for a serial letter lets you select all the table data or only selected row(s) of the table. You can also print all the letters into a new Writer document instead of a paper printer.
