Looking to start contributing to LibreOffice documentation

Hello!

My name is Annie. I am currently exploring a career transition into
technical writing, and would like contribute to LibreOffice's documentation
efforts. My goals are to develop and practice my technical writing skills
and start to build my portfolio.

A little about myself: My educational background is in chemical engineering,
during which I spent my summers on a variety of research projects. I moved
into business technology consulting as a new grad when I realized I am not
suited for creating technology. While in consulting, I had the opportunity
to lead and execute the documentation effort on a software implementation,
and have slowly come to orient towards a career in technical writing. I
enjoy being able to combine technical knowledge with user-friendly design,
pressing flowers, and trying new cooking recipes.

I appreciate any guidance on the best way for a beginner to contribute, and
can commit to 4 hours per week at this time. If it makes sense, I intend to
start with reviewing the Help contents and User Guides, researching for
improvements, and adding in artwork. As I become more familiar with the
topics available, I intend to start writing and editing.

Looking forward to learning from and working with you all!

Kind regards,

Annie Nguyen

Welcome!

Others will give you the guidance that you need. What I would like to know is what is your experience level in using LibreOffice. What is your knowledge of styles in a text document? What operating system does your computer use? These are some basic background questions that is helpful for us to know.

Personal example: I began nearly 20 years ago with little knowledge about the program. I had a lot to learn, but I did. Learning to use styles is very important for our work so I read the chapters on styles in the Writer Guide, learning and applying them as I went. It is gratifying work. You can also.

Dan

Hi Dan,

Thank you!

To answer your questions:

* Level of experience with LibreOffice: None, but excited to learn
* Knowledge of styles: To confirm, you are referring to formatting styles e.g. heading styles, numbering styles? I am comfortable with using them in MS Word documents to make them more navigable and easier to read, and in MS PowerPoint to apply a consistent design across slides (colour and font theme, Slide Master).
* Operating system: Windows

Thank you for pointing me to the Writer Guide and highlighting that styles are important. I will read up on it.
