Like any application, LibreOffice cannot get involved until it is 
started. It's up to your operating system to start whatever 
application you want to use when you double-click a document file. 
LibreOffice will have set "associations" for .odt, .ods, etc. file 
types in your operating system when you installed it; you may or may 
not have accepted its offer to set associations for .doc, .xls, etc. 
file types.

Yes. One way is to run the LibreOffice installation again, this time 
accepting the offer to set associations for Microsoft Office document 
file types (if that is your problem). Otherwise, you can set
