Hi :)
I guess you already tried switching off Java in LO (or that you need Java
for database or accessibility and can't)?  Something like;

Tools - Options - Advanced

has a tick-box at the top of the dialogue. If LO does grumble about
missing it you can always switch it back on and try whatever-it-was again.

I guess the upper-limit is possibly something like;
Ram - ( 2 x (Whatever your OS claims to work in + whatever other running
programs claim they need)

You can find out more simply several ways including by using

free -m

on the command-line in Linux and possibly Mac. Windows has some sort of
process manager that used to be accessed through Ctrl Alt Del (while
crossing your fingers and hoping it didn't just reboot the machine). One
of the tabs in there showed how much Ram was being used (and how much
free). In Linux you can sometimes find what process are hogging resources
by typing in

top

- and then Ctrl C to escape before you get too hooked.

 Hey Tom,
My Libreoffice slowed to the point it took minutes to load a single
document. It became a choice of fix it or get rid of it.

So I kept increasing memory till the problem went away. I'm sure there's
an upper limit, but I haven't reached it... yet.

Combining memory increases with loading LO at start-up gave me best
results.

  Hi :)

Thanks for sharing! I'm never sure how much i can jack them up by so
it's good to have figures that work. I'm guessing you have more than 384
Mb of Ram! (like, who doesn't these days!) :)

The advice for speeding up Calc is correct, but the memory
recommendations weren't robust enough for my system.

This worked great:

Click [Tools] [Options] [Memory]
*Undo *
  Number of steps: *10*

*Graphics Cache*
  Use for LibreOffice: *384 *MB
  Memory per object: *10*.0 MB
Remove from memory after: 00:10 hh:mm

*Cache for Inserted Objects*
  Number of objects: *50*

*LibreOffice Quickstarter*
*X* Load LibreOffice during system start-up

Don't be afraid to jack it up!
