CalcG chapter 1 submitted for revision

I have uploaded a new Calc Guide Chapter 1 draft for revision.
But I could not "submit it for review" because I keep getting this error:

message.simple-workflow.failure

New sections are clearly labeled with comment bubbles.

All out-dated screenshots were changed. However, the final result is a mixture of different themes:

  * XP-silver
  * Windows XP
  * Adwaite + evolve (added in this last revision)

For the sake of aesthetic consistency, I would have changed them all to match the same theme, but in many cases XP-silver (or even Windows XP) looks better than Adwaita+evolve because window frames are more clearly defined.

The section on "Copying or Moving Sheets" may require some "synchronisation" with the "Getting Started With Calc" latest draft. I intentionally rewrote this section in a how-to structure instead of using the same text in Getting Started.

Let me know your comments so that further amendments may be made.

Thanks, Gabriel. I'll deal with the chapter. The screenshots in many
chapters are from a mixture of operating systems, so I don't see this
as a problem, other than aesthetically.

I agree that screenshots are not a problem, even more, it makes more
evident that LO is cross-platform.
I've already started with chapter 2, so I keep moving while ch 1 is
reviewed.

PS: Yes, I used the wrong email account. Thanks for pointing it out.

Tom,
Thanks for the warning.
That being the case, I'll go back on my steps to replace the screenshots.
But we should let the entire community know about this matter. I don't know
about the other guides, but the Calc one has quite a few. I'm currently
working on chapter 2 where about 80% of screenshots are from Windows XP.

Tomorrow, I'll upload the corrected version of chapter 1.

The Docs group some time ago decided that it's really not an issue and
we are not worrying about WindowsXP pix. Indeed we are not worrying
about Windows 7 pix, though we mostly avoid them when possible. As Tom
notes, legal opinion differs on this topic. I choose to ignore it...
especially where WindowsXP is concerned.

In other words, feel free to replace all the pix in the Calc Guide for
v3.4; that's certainly a good thing to do, but IMO not by any means
essential.

Hi
Screenshots that appear on a web-site are fine, because they are easy to remove when/if we get served with a cease&desist type of notice.  It's not so easy to swap out images in printed books that have already been bought, printed and held by thousands of people out there.

I think it's a LOT easier to avoid the issue now than to deal with paying legal experts time, adding extra days in courts, perhaps paying damages afterwards.  It's not likely to be the main thrust of an MS suit against us but it might be an extra card they play in court timed to gain tactical advantage by distracting our defence from the main fight.

MS Office is a major percentage of MS profits.  To think that MS wont come after us at some point seems very naive unless LO remains a tiny percentage of the market.  Under TDF LO has grown significantly faster than during any equivalent time-frame under Sun.

I don't see the point in risking it when we really don't need to.  There are a tiny percentage of pix that are significantly different in Windows so it makes sense to minimise our risks to that tiny percentage.  Also, why promote MS in the guides?
Regards from
Tom

There's no need to reopen a discussion already closed. On my part, I'll replace W-XP screenshots whenever possible. The updated draft of Calc chapter 1 has just been uploaded and is ready to be revised.

Thanks Jean, Tom, and everyone for being so attentive to the mailing list. Communication in this team is so fluid that many a company should take as an example.

I have some general and specific comments.
1) On the Copyright page, you need to update the publication date,
software version, and the email address for feedback.
2) The replacement Figure 1 is of very poor quality and uses the wrong
LO icon set (must be set to Galaxy; see recent note to Peter S). In
fact, all of the replacement pix that show icons are using the wrong
set.
3) All blank paragraphs should be removed. Most of them appear to be
after new figures. Paragraphs with figures must be in OOoFigure style,
not OOoTextBody style.
4) Unsaved changes icon (status bar) has changed.
5) Please replace the little arrows in menu paths with >, making sure
that the character style for the > and the space before and after it
is OOoMenuPath.
6) One trick I use for getting rid of the OOo logo in the upper left
of pix that are otherwise okay is to open the pic in Gimp and fiddle
it there--instead of recapturing all the pix. Since many of the pix in
the earlier chapter are of a higher quality, that might improve the
result. Of course, some pix are wrong in other ways, so that trick
might not work.
7) Please set LO to use its own Save and Open dialogs. I think you've
used a Ubuntu Save dialog in Figure 16.
8) Be sure that no paragraphs are of style "Default".
9) In procedural lists, sentences should end with a period (full
stop), unless a colon is needed to introduce a nest list.
10) Sheets can be moved in another way (by dragging) in addition to
the new way that you have correctly described.

I have not checked out the file, so you can have another go at it.

Ok. I'll set down to that right away and let you know once I'm done with it.

It seems I have a problem, Galaxy Icon Set is not installed in the LO version for Ubuntu 11.10.
All I have is:
- Human (default)
- Human

Does anyone know where I can download and extension to have it added?

This is not a Ubuntu icon set. This is a LibreOffice icon set. As I
explained in my recent note to Peter S on this list:

The choice of the LO icon set is found in Tools > Options >
LibreOffice > View; in the User Interface section of that page, under
Icon size and style, choose Galaxy (default).

--Jean

Well, that's exactly where I'm looking, but all I have is that "Human" icon set.
As I couldn't find any extension to have it added, I removed the entire Libre Office suite and installed it again. I assumed that being Galaxy the LO default icon set, I should get it when I re-installed the suite but I still get the same result.
Anyway, I also have the Windows version (and the portable version as well) and it does come with Galaxy included. Guess I could use it instead, but I'd really like to have it figured out for Ubuntu, since this is the OS I use 90% of the time.

Here's a screenshot of what I see:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B-Ss0IpkcBLEOWZkM2NiNTktNTdhMi00NTlkLTg0MTUtMTdkNWZmY2NjZDc0

AFAIK, LibreOffice's icon set defaults to the icon set for the
operating system in use, despite the necessary set being called Galaxy
(default). And you are NOT looking in the right place, because "Human"
isn't even one of the choices in LibreOffice. On Ubuntu, the choices
are Automatic (Tango), Galaxy (default), High Contrast, Crystal,
Tango, and Oxygen.

Have you got a copy of "Producing LibreOffice User Guides"? If not,
get it from Alfresco, English > Documentation > Resources > Drafts. In
it, on page 4, is a description of how to find and set the LibreOffice
icon set and a picture of part of the relevant dialog (which has the
title Options - LibreOffice - View). The doc also contains some other
setup tips. Some details (such as which template to use) are a bit out
of date, but the info on the icon set is correct. (I am working on
updating other topics.)

Open LibreOffice. INSIDE LibreOffice, go to Tools > Options >
LibreOffice > View. There you will find what I'm talking about in the
User Interface section of that page; under Icon size and style, choose
Galaxy (default).

--Jean

I apologise. I just now looked at your picture and I see what you
mean. I think you must be using the copy of LibreOffice that is in the
Ubuntu repository? It does have "Human" listed. But on my copy of
Ubuntu, it's also got Galaxy (default) listed. So I don't know what is
different about your setup.

--Jean

So.... let's try to solve this mystery and work out what is different
between your Ubuntu setup and mine. I assume we are both using Ubuntu
11.04, and that we have LibreOffice 3.4.4 installed. Is this correct?

Are you using the copy of LO that is installed with Ubuntu?

Do you also have LibreOffice (downloaded from the LO website)
installed on Ubuntu?

I meant Ubuntu 11.10. Sorry again!

I have uploaded a new version of Calc Guide chapter 1 (0301CG34) to Alfresco.
All comments were addressed.
Some general changes I made include:
- All blank paragraphs were deleted.
- Checked and fixed any paragraph with "default" format.
- Fixed procedural lists. Added a period (.) after each step.
- Repalced the "arrows" for " > " and updated the character format to OOoMenuPath (including the space before and after ">")

Specific changes are marked with comments within the document itself.

Note: to better understand my comments, when I mention "original" image/document, I refer to the published version. And when I say "previous" image/document, I refer to the version I submitted two weeks ago.

Look forward for comments/ feedback, to make further changes.

Gabriel.

I've checked this one out.

Between you, Peter, and David, looks like I'll be busy for the next
few days. This is a very good situation to be in.

Thank you to all.

--Jean

Well, we'd better keep ourselves busy if we want to have the entire guide published before the next version of LO is released
