Is it useful to give the number of a figure reference a different character style?
To make it clear that it is a reference.

Kind regards, Kees

Hi Kees,

Is it useful to give the number of a figure reference a different
character style?
To make it clear that it is a reference.

I have marked all references with the same style as a hyperlink (German
Base Handbuch). Created a new for my special layout. So the reference
could be seen in *.pdf-exported documents.

Robert

Hi Robert

Thanks for the reaction. And yes, that is exactly what I mean.
But I suggest to use this consistently for all Guides.

Hello Kees and LO doc team

One way would be to put a frame around the illustration and the caption. That way it would give a good demarkation between text and the caption.

I find the caption text OK, but would be against using another font. Maybe we could use small caps attribute.

Anyone else with thoughts on this.

I do not mean the caption, but the reference to a cption in the text.

Hello Kees

Understood.
The whole of a figure reference in a paragraph could be given the character format “Emphasis”.
It is recommended to only use the actual figure number as the reference link. Using the word “Figure” as part of the link does cause translation problems.

I say no. Most readers won’t understand or care about the difference, and
it’s extra work for volunteers. I am very much in favour of as few
character styles as possible. I don’t like Keystroke, either, and I think
it is unnecessary.

Jean

I also think it’s unnecessary to make x-refs to chapters (number and name)
in italics, as Peter does.

Jean

Hello Jean

Old habits die hard.
I will remove the character format from chapter references on Version 7 Impress.

Hello Jean

I agree with you about the keystroke character format. Does not look good. The character format “Emphasis” is the better one to use.

Or define Keystroke to be italics, as it was previously. Saves changing all
the existing character styles applied.

Jean

Agreed

More things to change in the template... I’m collecting a list.

Hi, Peter et. al.,

just a quick explanation: the important thing is NOT to make the word
"Figure" part of the reference, because then there are problems with
translation (one needs to manually edit/translate the reference in LO
Writer, it cannot be localized in i.e. OmegaT).

Hello Martin

I did mention that the word “Figure” should not be part of the reference because of translation problems.
