But yes....maybe it should say "beta" on the face of it....

Is it possible to write the version number in a way that is

For example, current version of LibreOffice is called 3.3.0beta2 on
the website. Yet, when I open "About LibreOffice", I see
LibreOffice3.3.0 -- OOO330m9 (Build:1) libreoffice-build 3.2.99.2.

Nothing tells me whether I have the final version, a preliminary
version, a nightly build or...

I know I am able to find the proper information, but think about my
mother, or think about me, when I want to update my colleagues'
computers and can't easily see what version they have.

Putting "Beta" somewhere would be a good help. Members are installing the latest "Beta2" and are mostly unaware that it is a beta. As you said the current version of LibO is really not meant to be used on a production machine. But they still do it regardless and expect it to be bullet-proof.
