You should not need the first section: the full-width part can just be a normal part of your document.
I am wanting to do a Chapter Opening page, different from my other pages, and have the chapter heading go all the way across the top, but still have a 2 column body page. I have created a 2 col section before and left the base page as single column, and that worked, but I constantly had to watchdog the section from bleeding over to the next page, so that is not my preferred solution to this. Is there a way for a Section to pass across both columns of a page?
Forget the section for the first part, and make the rest of your document or chapter - the part that you want to be in two columns - a section. But - here's the trick - set the two-column property not to the page but to that *section* itself. You will find a Columns tab in the Section dialogues too.
