I don't know why you think this is not possible. The Mail Merge chapter of the manual says:
LibreOffice can access a wide variety of data sources, including spreadsheets, text files and databases ...

In the Select Address List panel of the Mail Merge Wizard, the Add... button allows you access to and use of a spreadsheet document file.
